Roses Shipped in a Box

#flowers #florist #Valentine’s Day

Admit it! You’re thinking about ordering your Valentine’s Day flowers and having them shipped in a box.

In famous words spoken by Julia Roberts in “Pretty Woman”:

BIG MISTAKE.    BIG.    HUGE!!

Let me show you what it looks like when you order your roses shipped in a box.

Would I kid you? This is honestly what it looks like. Your flowers are pre-packaged and handled by … gee…I don’t know him, do you?…at hubs across the country. You can tell how nicely they handle your package by the way they are neatly stacked and packed. You can tell how  much they care about the flowers by the way they are carefully piled and loaded into a truck.

Did I mention the weather? According to the Farmers Almanac 2014, this is the weather forecast for Phoenix: Winter will be colder than normal, with the coldest periods in early and mid-December and in late January. Precipitation will be below normal in the east and above normal in the west, with snowfall below normal in most places that normally receive snow.

And you already know how it is in the midwest, south and east!weather

Do you want your flowers dropped off on the COLD porch waiting for someone to bring them inside?

Of course you don’t!

    • Valentine’s Day can be a difficult day for those of us not in a relationship, but it’s a good day to Pay it Forward. Have you heard of that? If not, let me know and I’ll share it with you!! And thanks for always shopping at your local flower shop!

  1. I usually order my flowers. But then again, my aunt is a florist and I know that she handles a lot of “orders” from some of the online companies you order from. FTD is one of them. I have received flowers from ProFlowers in the past and I’ve never had a damaged box, or damaged flowers from them. I understand supporting local florists, but when they jack up the prices to two sometimes three times the amount you would normally pay, just because it’s Valentine’s, it is rather sad. I’m not saying you do. I’m saying that the florist shops I know around my area do.

    • Thank you, Brandi, for expressing this opinion. I value your thoughts and I’d like to comment on them. Florists do not “jack up their prices to two sometimes three times the amount you would normally pay, just because it’s Valentine’s Day”. I don’t know any florist that does that. However, the prices of roses are “jacked up” to us by 2 or 3 times, “just because it’s Valentine’s Day”. But can we pass that on to the consumer? Of course not. Roses that might cost 70 cents each during the year cost over $2.00 each now. The only way to recover the cost is to increase the price some, but we haven’t increased our prices in 3 years. Instead of are selective in the quality of our roses and other flowers and we know how many arrangements we can delivery on Vday and we don’t sell what we don’t have. I hope this helps you understand the supply and demand and why, although it appears the florists are cheating the consumer, they really are not.

  2. It is always better to have your flowers arrive in a beautiful arrangement – complete with a vase in which to display them. I love the arrangement pictured with the roses and lilies. It is really beautiful.

    • Thanks, Heather, It’s pretty scary that flowers are left in a box on a porch. We have people (here in Phoenix) who follow UPS trucks and pick up unattended/left packages (aka steal them). It’s not a good thing. That’s why we call on every order and the people know we’re coming with their flowers.

  3. I didn’t realize that was how they handled the flowers but there is no way I would want them to sit out in the cold for any length of time! I always order local. It helps our economy and I know the flowers are fresh.

  4. i love flowers. we’ve started sending them to my husband’s aunt because she’s in her 90s, lives alone, and we can’t get to visit as much as we’d like because she’s a little far away, but sending her a little bouquet or vase of flowers really brightens HER day and i know they make her feel so special.

i love that red frosted kind of vase- i’d be delighted to get that!

    • Your idea of sending flowers to your husband’s aunt it wonderful! I have an aunt who’s 104 and I send her flowers 6 or 7 times a year (yes, I called a florist in San Mateo, CA to order flowers for her for Vday). My family sent her 100 carnations for her 100th birthday! She always calls to say Thank You and yes, I can tell they brighten her day. Happy Valentine’s Day to you! I hope your husband orders that red vase for you!

  5. Your pic of the warehouse shipping is priceless! My hubby always goes to our local florist…he is welcomed there ~ made to feel comfortable and that matters! I am positive you give the same great customer service. Have a great and busy Valentine’s Week.

    • Thanks, Debbie! I could hardly believe the picture when I first saw it, but I have since seen documentaries on the “hub” and I know it’s true. I’m proud of your hubby! And yes, we’re busy…I won’t be blogging much this coming week! Happy Valentine’s Day to you!

  6. Wow. While I consider myself pretty aware of how our food is processed before we get it, I’d never really thought about how other things are handled before they are so well-presented to us. I’m a big supported of local businesses, including our local flower shop.
