Admit it! You’re thinking about ordering your Valentine’s Day flowers and having them shipped in a box.
In famous words spoken by Julia Roberts in “Pretty Woman”:
BIG MISTAKE. BIG. HUGE!!
Let me show you what it looks like when you order your roses shipped in a box.
Would I kid you? This is honestly what it looks like. Your flowers are pre-packaged and handled by … gee…I don’t know him, do you?…at hubs across the country. You can tell how nicely they handle your package by the way they are neatly stacked and packed. You can tell how much they care about the flowers by the way they are carefully piled and loaded into a truck.
Did I mention the weather? According to the Farmers Almanac 2014, this is the weather forecast for Phoenix: Winter will be colder than normal, with the coldest periods in early and mid-December and in late January. Precipitation will be below normal in the east and above normal in the west, with snowfall below normal in most places that normally receive snow.
And you already know how it is in the midwest, south and east!
Do you want your flowers dropped off on the COLD porch waiting for someone to bring them inside?
Of course you don’t!

It’s a good thing I don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day I guess LOL. When I order flowers, I ALWAYS order local!
Valentine’s Day can be a difficult day for those of us not in a relationship, but it’s a good day to Pay it Forward. Have you heard of that? If not, let me know and I’ll share it with you!! And thanks for always shopping at your local flower shop!
I usually order my flowers. But then again, my aunt is a florist and I know that she handles a lot of “orders” from some of the online companies you order from. FTD is one of them. I have received flowers from ProFlowers in the past and I’ve never had a damaged box, or damaged flowers from them. I understand supporting local florists, but when they jack up the prices to two sometimes three times the amount you would normally pay, just because it’s Valentine’s, it is rather sad. I’m not saying you do. I’m saying that the florist shops I know around my area do.
Thank you, Brandi, for expressing this opinion. I value your thoughts and I’d like to comment on them. Florists do not “jack up their prices to two sometimes three times the amount you would normally pay, just because it’s Valentine’s Day”. I don’t know any florist that does that. However, the prices of roses are “jacked up” to us by 2 or 3 times, “just because it’s Valentine’s Day”. But can we pass that on to the consumer? Of course not. Roses that might cost 70 cents each during the year cost over $2.00 each now. The only way to recover the cost is to increase the price some, but we haven’t increased our prices in 3 years. Instead of are selective in the quality of our roses and other flowers and we know how many arrangements we can delivery on Vday and we don’t sell what we don’t have. I hope this helps you understand the supply and demand and why, although it appears the florists are cheating the consumer, they really are not.
It is always better to have your flowers arrive in a beautiful arrangement – complete with a vase in which to display them. I love the arrangement pictured with the roses and lilies. It is really beautiful.
Thanks for stating your favorite, Tracie. I designed that one, and while I was designing it another customer came in and liked it so much that he wanted one, too!
Ever since my hubby helped deliver flowers for a local florist and the one that did my wedding I am in love with local florists. It supports small business too!!
How wonderful that your hubby learned first-hand the value of delivering flowers for the local florist!! We have several drivers lined up for Friday. Does he want to come help?
Love the “behind the scenes” photos. Granted, I would never want anyone to just leave me flowers on the steps! Your arrangement’s are always so beautiful!
Thanks, Heather, It’s pretty scary that flowers are left in a box on a porch. We have people (here in Phoenix) who follow UPS trucks and pick up unattended/left packages (aka steal them). It’s not a good thing. That’s why we call on every order and the people know we’re coming with their flowers.
Wow I had NO idea how all those other flowers are actually handled! No way! I’ll take some of those beautiful bouquets instead!
Pretty awful, isn’t it, Jennifer? Don’t forget to pass the word along!
I love to support local businesses. It is important to keep local resources at hand rather than just support big megastores
Thanks for the vote of confidence, Eva. We compete with the big box stores and it can be very difficult for us, until people realize the service we provide is invaluable.
I didn’t realize that was how they handled the flowers but there is no way I would want them to sit out in the cold for any length of time! I always order local. It helps our economy and I know the flowers are fresh.
Thanks, Pam. It is pretty awful how the flowers in the boxes are handled, and yes, that’s why you should buy your flowers from your local flower shop. Thanks so much!
That’s a shame that something so sweet and lovely as flowers aren’t handled with more care. A more personal touch is definitely nice.
There is no doubt the people who are tossing the boxes around really don’t care much about the flowers inside. That’s not true for us, where we talk to each of our flowers, pamper them, sing to them, and admire each and every one of them.
Love the pictures of the flowers in the boxes. I never really gave it much thought until now. I’ve always ordered from our local florist.
Thanks for ordering from your local florist. Please share the good news of supporting your local flower shop!
If they are not local… they do not come to my house or any one I choose to send to. I like the personal touch!
Hurray for you, Debbie! Supporting the local businesses is the best thing you can do!
Support local business!!
AMEN!!!
What lovely arrangements. I love getting flowers on VDay.
I’m glad, Helene, that you get flowers on Vday! Don’t forget to make sure they’re from a real flower shop!
I always order flowers from a local florist! I think it supports local business and they always are beautiful and fresh!
Thanks so much, Cara! On behalf of all local flower shops, I thank you!!
i love flowers. we’ve started sending them to my husband’s aunt because she’s in her 90s, lives alone, and we can’t get to visit as much as we’d like because she’s a little far away, but sending her a little bouquet or vase of flowers really brightens HER day and i know they make her feel so special.
i love that red frosted kind of vase- i’d be delighted to get that!
Your idea of sending flowers to your husband’s aunt it wonderful! I have an aunt who’s 104 and I send her flowers 6 or 7 times a year (yes, I called a florist in San Mateo, CA to order flowers for her for Vday). My family sent her 100 carnations for her 100th birthday! She always calls to say Thank You and yes, I can tell they brighten her day. Happy Valentine’s Day to you! I hope your husband orders that red vase for you!
Your pic of the warehouse shipping is priceless! My hubby always goes to our local florist…he is welcomed there ~ made to feel comfortable and that matters! I am positive you give the same great customer service. Have a great and busy Valentine’s Week.
Thanks, Debbie! I could hardly believe the picture when I first saw it, but I have since seen documentaries on the “hub” and I know it’s true. I’m proud of your hubby! And yes, we’re busy…I won’t be blogging much this coming week! Happy Valentine’s Day to you!
To be honest, I’d love to just get flowers from the hubby! LOL
I know what you mean, Lisa!! When I complained to my husband that he didn’t buy me any roses, he told me to go into the back yard and cut them off the bush!! It’s not the same!!
Love the bouquet with the roses and the orchids! I bet this time of the year is super busy for you!
OMG, yes, this is a crazy week, and one day of torture on Friday! But we love the excitement and the feeling of being able to share with our customers! Happy Valentine’s Day to you!
Wow! Never thought of it that way. The proFlowers shot is jaw dropping. I love buying local so I always go there first.
Thanks, Mary. It is an interesting (and frightening) part of our industry where the flowers are thrown around in a box! I’m glad you shop local!
Wow. While I consider myself pretty aware of how our food is processed before we get it, I’d never really thought about how other things are handled before they are so well-presented to us. I’m a big supported of local businesses, including our local flower shop.
Thanks for your comment. I think it’s fair to say people don’t know what goes on “in the back of the house” until they are part of it. Thanks for supporting your local flower shop!
